FRESH START - Basement Apartment Styling

image

Hola hola!

I’m SO excited to finally share these pictures with you. You may remember my previous post on the styling progress of this Adam’s Morgan basement apartment. It’s been a long project as we were dealing with actual renovations and not only with the styling process. But here it is! Girly, calm and full of fun colors, brings a well-deserved FRESH START to a couple of amazing ladies working in the DC area.

image

image

Challenges? Many. We were working with a small budget, so we decided to invest in some key pieces (like this beautiful gray sofa!) and pretty accessories (me encanta accesorizar), BUT the idea was to reuse and repurpose as many pieces as possible. How to do it? Adding some fun DIY projects to it :)

image

The TV stand, mini bar and side table in the living area got a fresh coat of white paint which completely changed the look of the place and brought much more light into it. You know, in basement apartments this is key!

image

As this is a rental place we were not totally in charge of final changes, but we could definitely beautify them all! This pretty breakfast bar is one of my favorite additions - I’d spend all the time here working on my computer or enjoying some tea & pie. Isn’t it cute?

image

This piece was going to be painted too, but after adding some fun accessories it just fit in the space. I’m a very big fan of extra storage solutions. These two boxes are great for magazines, throws and other stuff you need to cozy up.

image

image

The dining room set was a keeper. My client got it a couple of years ago and loved it’s shape. So, even though it is a bit big for the space it does have a glass table that helps creating the idea of a bigger room. It did’t need nothing but this gorgeous mint green center piece and the cutest side wine bar. Wine should always be available, right?

image

image

To finish, we filled the house with plants and art! All pieces were already from the client’s collection and just needed to be properly placed. Don’t you love this DC one with the cherry blossoms? Perfect for spring!

So, here it is. Clients are happy and planning on throwing a house-warming party soon! :) I’m very pleased with the new layout and with how we ended reusing a bunch of previously owned pieces. The idea is always to help my clients save some money.

5 Steps to Style your Work Space

image

April is here! Lots of things are happening in my life these days and I seriously need to get organized on all projects - especially the fun ones! So, first things first, I knew I had to set up an inspiring and fresh work space where magic could happen - and my work space was basically my dining table (seriously, every time). Here´s a before picture of my cluttered desk at home - not so pretty huh? Keep reading to see the big change!

image

I definitely was not taking full advantage of this room at home. And even though I liked the classic lines in our desk I never put time to style it properly (sad face!) it kind of stayed there being dark and unattractive, until now!

image

image

Luckily I was energized that day; went out and got some pretty accessories to transform the whole room into a bright inspiring area. I did it using these 5 simple steps:

1. Lighting: The most important part of a work area, especially if you work late or if you don’t have much natural light in the room. Look at this pretty lamp I found at HomeGoods. It was love at first sight.

2. Storage: Get creative! Besides files and folders, add small containers for clips, tacks and pencils. Use what you have around the house, and try reusing gift boxes, dishes and containers. Add an inspiration board nearby where you can also hang notes and to-do’s (those cork tiles are perfect for that!).

image

image

image

3. Working Area: Make sure you have room for creating. This desk has a drawer where I can hide my computer when not using it. There’s plenty of clean space to write, including a pretty tray that holds notepads and pens, and can be moved around to accommodate my needs.

4. Comfort: I moved this little bench to the side and use it as a table to put my purse, jacket or whatever before I sit down to work. I can access my stuff easily and always have a place for it - instead of using the couch or the floor (yikes!) Have you seen the fussy rug under my chair? It feels so good under my feet and adds some texture to the area.

image

5. Personalize it: Make the space yours! Bring flowers, pretty notebooks, your favorite washi tape, whatever that will brighten up your working routine and keep you going. Best thing about desks? You can always change their whole appearance with just a couple of new accessories, and give them a fresh look.

Do you have a similar project in mind? I keep re-arranging furniture and changing accessories in the house. This desk might get some transformations soon - which I’ll make sure to share with you ;)

Thanks so much for passing by! xo,

Easy Styling - Birthday Party!

image

March is our birthday month. And the hubby was turning 30! woohooo! I was so excited about his birthday celebration - probably more than him - that I couldn’t stop fantasizing about the party and how to make it super special for him.

image

Obviously, I was picturing a themed party with a photo booth included (mínimo!) and a bunch of details, but he wanted a small get together at home, close friends, pizza and beer. Alright! The birthday boy should get what he wants :)

image

image

So, there I was trying to make our home look celebratory but in a simple way. What was the answer? Balloons! The cheapest, simplest and timeless way to decorate a birthday party. I chose some golden, silver and black ones to place all over our apartment, and got some party horns to spread around.

image

Besides the pizza, we got some cake (it’s not a birthday if there’s not a cake!), sweets (Persian cookies in this case) and his favorite candy: Gumballs! I love how they instantly added some color to the dessert table.

image

Our hookah was also ready to use. I displayed it in my good-for-everything standing tray for easy access. It’s so shiny and pretty that it looks like it’s part of our home decor. Actually, it’s still in the same spot. Love it there!

image

image

Our friends Kris and Steph brought some ridiculously good vegan cupcakes that added some fun and love to the party (Thanks, guys! <3) It was such a fun night and most importantly, very special for the birthday boy. Do you have a birthday celebration coming? Share your ideas with us. We’d love to hear from you!

Styling a Rental Space

image

I’m very excited to share the styling progress on this apartment! It’s been a LONG process as we had contractors working in the space, unfinished areas all over, and so many plans - and furniture hunting - to complete the decor. First thing we took care of was the rental space: calm bedroom + sitting / lounge area with a private entrance. You can see some before pictures in my previous post  :)

image

image

Look at this welcoming space! I wanted it to be calm, bright and happy as the ideal tenant is a young professional lady. Because it’s a small area in a shared apartment it was important to set up different areas and take advantage of all the space. Narrow pieces of furniture and bright colors help bringing the light inside the bedroom. And a pretty rug marks a chic and practical sitting area outside. Ain’t it cute?

image

image

When styling a rental space, it’s important to leave plenty of room for the tenant to decorate it as she wants. Ideally it will have the potential to welcome any style and personality. So, I always recommend to avoid clutter, specially hanging pictures on the walls - I find that to be a very personal decision. On the contrary, try to leave empty walls and shelves for creation.

image

I’m loving this small hanging out area. These chairs were and immediate crush, even though I’m usually scared of using reds in the decor. It feels perfect for sharing a glass of wine with a friend or enjoying a Sunday morning coffee. Would you use bold colors in your furniture too?

I’m very happy with the results and so is my client! :) This little but practical space is looking much more cozy and personalized now; and I can’t wait to share pictures of the whole apartment with you! Hope you like it. xo.

It’s time for Spring!

image

Happy times, people!

Spring is coming and it’s the perfect time to add some color to your home. I just love the transition to colors everywhere, beautiful weather and lighter jackets. It makes me happy, so I decided to bring some of that happy to our apartment.

How to do it? Many different ways! Get some flowers, of course. Choose your favorite colors, be impulsive, be creative and go for what catches your eye. This time that I went shopping I happened upon this colorful and super creative Kleenex boxes. I was surprised by their new cool designs and remembered how useful they are. So, I ended buying a bunch of them that I placed around my apartment.

image

This blue and purple box was so pretty that I got two of them! I knew it was going to style some of my spaces perfectly. And here you go, there’s one in my living room and another one in my bedroom’s reading nook.

image

Spring also comes with allergies. Bummer. I didn’t have them before moving to DC. And, now I can’t live without tissues around. Same for the hubby. First thing he does when he gets home is to look for the Kleenex box - true story! That’s why I have to have decorative tissue boxes everywhere. And, obviously I was THRILLED to know that there’s actually a Kleenex Style Studio to make sure customers keep being stylish and practical at the same time. How cool is that? :)

image

What about some fruits? Estas mandarinas son tan lindas! So cute I had to make them part of our decor. Have you ever tried styling your home with fruits? It’s easy, cheap and helps you transition within seasons.

image

I also tried to style our (very serious and dark) bar with them. And hey, I didn’t have to go that far. In the end, I liked the sober palette with a pop of color. I even placed another stylish box of Kleenex in there and it matched the decor perfectly! I’ll keep it there to quickly sip up any spills.

As you can see, I went for all colors I liked. Purple, orange, yellow and even blue! You can make them work together if you use neutrals and add some pops of color. Anything is valid! Pretty accessories or useful things.

So, how are you going to spring up your home this year? Would you try any of these ideas?

This post is sponsored by Kleenex, but my love for their Style Studio is all my own!

1, 2, 3 TRIPLES!

Have you ever met a Peruvian? If your answer is yes, I’m sure you definitely heard about how proud we are of our delicious and multi-flavored food. Peruvian cuisine is full of colors, flavors, salsas, everything mixed together, trying to create even better combinations and bursts of flavors in your mouth with each bite. I don’t know if this sounds poetic enough to describe our food, but do you get the idea that it IS pretty good?! ;)

As you might know by now from my previous posts, I’m all about easy recipes and projects. So, I’m sorry. I’m not going to give you the recipe for our best delicacies. However! these sandwiches are my favorite. Commonly known as “Triples” because of their 3 layers, they are: a) delicious! b) healthy and vegetarian, and c) super easy to make. Tienes que probarlos! :)

They are perfect to take over a pot luck get-together, or to offer to your guests! Here is what you need:

  • 16 slices of bread - your favorite kind!
  • 2 medium tomatoes, sliced.
  • 2 hard boiled eggs, sliced.
  • 2 avocados, sliced.
  • mayonnaise.
  • salt n’ pepper

Place each ingredient and then top it with a slice of bread. You can use some mayonnaise on each slice so they are “glued” together. Salt n’ pepper every ingredient before putting the slice of bread on top.

You want them as tea sandwiches? Trim the crusts, and cut them as small as you want. If not, just cut them in half and enjoy!

Hope you like them :)

Styling Progress: Basement Apartment

Buenos días!

A couple of friends asked me why I don’t write in spanish more often, so I decided to throw a couple of words here and there to spice things up a little bit. Are you ready? :)

I’ve been working hard these past days on fun styling projects! One of them comes with special good vibes. Welcome to the full-of-memories basement in Adams Morgan, recently renovated! This apartment has lots of stories in it. Three friends of mine have occupied it at some point. Crazy parties, long talks, police coming to check on weird situations. Tons and tons of sleep overs. Even my parents stayed here for a couple of days during my wedding. Tantos recuerdos. And now, I get to style it pretty!

image

This is a rental place, always a challenge as I have to work with whatever I get. I went to see it last week, and this is what I found. Lots of potential! New kitchen’s bar, bigger windows, new floors! Even though ceramics are not my favorite, they are much much better than the previous carpet. Trust me. This is luxury here.

image

We decided to start with the common areas - living room and dining room. So, I came up with some ideas for furniture distribution and basic buys. As always, the couch hunting gets all the attention (you know, this piece could determine the use of space, decor and even the room’s lighting!). We have looked at A BUNCH of options in our budget and will make a final decision this week. So exciting!

image

Have you seen this brand new kitchen? I know the plastic wraps are not that appealing, but it’s going to be preeeettttttty. Breakfast bar? I think so :) And a BIG plus. This apartment has a great room for rent with its own private entrance (pictures show the work in progress) I will be working on it too and try to transform it into a cosy, beautiful space. Can’t wait to show you some after pictures!

image

And last but not least, here’s the pink and girly inspiration board we put together. !¿No es lindo?! I’m so jealous. Having pink pillows gets a little bit difficult when sharing the house with a boy. And don’t take me wrong, no stereotypes in here. It’s just that as a couple, you end building your own particular style. In our case, it’s classic and more gray. I will definitely have to share more pictures of my home with you :)

Would you try any of these ideas? Hope you get some inspiration for your home. xo.

Classy & Chic Inspiration

Hello there! I have been very excited/busy these days with a couple of styling projects, organization craziness and personal dreams too. One thing I know is that I’m a DO-ER, so when I think about decor and styling I always try to include a DIY project, easy reupholstering, painting or similar. I mean, options are endless! The brainstorming is usually a strong blizzard  for me so the creation process feels like a wild roller coaster. Don’t take me wrong, I LOVE it! It’s just that it comes together with so much excitement and good eagerness that when I think about all the possible options and styles, it’s impossible to make a decision. Because oh yeah, obviously, I want them ALL!

image

I’m currently working with a couple of ladies living in the area. Different apartments, different personalities, taste and styling needs. While trying to find the perfect style for each of them, I found these beautiful places - very much classy and chic - that will definitely make part of some inspiration boards!

image

image

If you are renting a place in DC you are probably sharing a town house with a group of friends, or trying to accommodate all your stuff in an studio apartment - like these ones above. Every space presents its own challenges, but in any case the effective use of space is key to make that space your home. Have you ever lived in a studio apartment?

image

Basements are pretty popular too, they can be spacious but the lack of natural light can make your decoration process a tricky one. Adding some whites and metallics to your decor is a great way to bring more light into a room - plus it adds some glam to the picture.

image

And what about some color? These boho chic bedrooms are just dreamy.

image

image

With all the inspiration tools one can reach to these days, it just gets too hard to decide for one specific style, one single solution or one palette of colors. I’m all about neutrals and pastels. They make rooms fell calm and welcoming. But again, everything depends on your own personal style. Do you prefer colors? How do you mix and match? The BIG challenge is finding the right combination for your own personal beautiful space. When styling, always trust your gut. Always go organic and naturally follow what attracts you the most. How do you feel about these pink walls? Ain’t them pretty? mmm. Not so much? Oh, I got it ;)

Colorful and Easy Table Set Up

Hello again! Hope you had a great long weekend! Mine was full of yummy food, get- togethers, relaxation and friends. Having people over is one of my favorite things - as you might have noticed already :) Our friends Amita and Anik came over during the weekend to spend some time together, have cocktails, munch, and play cards against humanity. You know, the usual.

Contrary to what most people think, you don’t have to spend hours planning for a visit or styling a table when having people over (actually, the more you do it, the easier it gets!). You need to start a collection of serving trays and accessories with the right pieces to combine and beautify depending on the occasion. Use and reuse!

image

Black and white pieces are my basics. I love how they match with almost all textures and patterns, and look different all the time. To set up the table this time I used colors over a black tablecloth. I love flowers to decorate, but I decided to use what I found in the pantry: colorful napkins and plates, miss match place mats and fruits!

image

Don’t you love the color on these clementines? I used 3 of them as a simple center piece and spread a couple more on both ends of the table, and Voila! a colorful easy table set up.

image

Do you have a tray? Then, you have a bar! You can set up a small bar area wherever is more convenient for you by easily arranging a tray with the basics: glasses, mixers, a spoon to stir, whatever you want to display. I love this white tray because it comes with a folding x base. It’s super practical, and can be used in any occasion. Price is not that bad either! ;)

image

Cocktails, anyone? Bubbles are the way to go this year. Period. Add St.Germain and/or cranberry juice for a classier taste.

image

I’m very much a hostess, and it’s always a treat for me to entertain. I like enjoying my home and my friend’s visits. In the end, I feel like I’m creating memories for life - I know it sounds very romaaantic, but it’s true! (also, that’s what I’ve been telling my husband this is all about). So, enjoy your get-togethers, and long weekends, and disputes over card games. Make them count. Share the Love! xo.

Valentine’s Breakfast for two

Nothing beats breakfast in bed. Morning coffee and yummy food will make you feel extra pampered if you enjoy them in your pj’s. This is one of my favorite ideas to celebrate Valentine’s Day - or any other day, to be honest. Easy to make, super cute and perfect for sharing with your special someone! Heart-shaped toasts, anyone? :)

image

For those who know me well it’s clear that I’m ALL about romance. I love love, and really enjoy all these celebrations around it. They give you an excuse to be extra romantic. Oh, I’ll take it! Any day, anytime. Even when it comes to making your daily breakfast a special one. That’s what I’m talking about!

image

image

Here’s a nice trick I tried for the first time recently. My husband loves eggs in a frame, so I decided to make them for him adding some extra cuteness. This was so easy to make and results are picture perfect! Take a look at these heart-shaped toasts! Would you like some jam with that? :)

image

If you already know how to make eggs in a frame, there’s is only a small variation: using a cookie cutter - with a fun shape - to cut the center of the bread. If you haven’t tried making them yet, this is what you need:

image

Some simple steps to follow:

image

image

Don’t forget to add your personal touch. This time I made some easy love notes and placed fresh flowers on the serving tray. Made with love, shared with love.

What are your plans for this Valentine’s Day? I will celebrate with close friends and the hubby because, you know? love should be shared! Enjoy!

Closet Styling - Young Professional

You’ve got the style, you’ve got the clothes but sometimes it’s not that easy to put them together. Get inspired! Whenever I feel like my closet is getting a little bit boring I try to rearrange it. It’s a great exercise to remember all the great pieces that might be hidden somewhere in there!

I tried helping my friend Steph with her personal space last weekend. She has great style - as well as a beautiful wardrobe! We had so much fun going shopping for accessories and organizing her closet together. And, I think we got great results! Here are some pictures of it :)

Some before shots.

Maximize your space! Use containers, specialty hangers and organization accessories, like a shoe-rack.

Surround yourself with beautiful things and style your closet! Create an inspiration space only for you. This time, I used a vintage vogue cover, a mirror and this cute jewelry box. Do you have any favorite pieces yourself? Place them where you can enjoy them everyday!

Dreamy DC Apartments

Oh my!  Well, I’m currently DREAMING of apartments in the DC area. This is home for me now, and I can’t stop picturing myself moving into one of these -real- modern, super cool apartments with incredible interior design and decor.

One step at a time! I will enjoy these pictures first, and then try to picture myself enjoying a cup of morning joe in each of them (it’s not such a that difficult task, let me tell you!) Which of these images speak to you the most? I’m absolutely in love with the huge windows in the first one (I think that’s on 14th St. which is THE spot to be these days) and all the neutral color palettes around.

DC offers great stores for buying furniture and pieces from all around the globe. It’s great to live in here! To me, it feels like home sweet home :)
