Moving On

image

Hey guys!

So, I’ve been definitely MIA for a couple of days. Life has been crazy and busy lately, but most importantly has been full of good changes and projects.

New beginnings all over the place. The first one, we are moving! Tomorrow to be exact. I actually don’t know how I managed to write this post, late at night, surrounded by boxes, sitting in my super messy bedroom. It’s been a lot of work, but I can’t tell you how excited I am about designing and decorating our new space! :) If you follow me on Instagram, you definitely know by now all about my adventures with paint, floors, and closet organization. Yes, all at once… jaja!

I’m grateful and looking forward to building stories in there. Also, I’ve been working a lot on a fresh look for Splendor! Seriously, I can’t wait to share it with all of you!

It’s time to move on. I think changes are good, sometimes difficult but necessary in lots of ways. Do you embrace change? Is it easy for you to adapt to new situations? Some people say that’s a gift - I think so too.

Have a fantastic week you all! Thanks for passing by and reading my crazy posts. xx

BLACKS & WHITES

Sounds simple, but it’s not. I’m all about neutrals: blacks, whites, grays, earth tones, you name it. These colors attract me, I find them elegant, sophisticated, peaceful and sexy - they can be all those things depending on how you use them. They let you grow into your own design.

And that’s exactly what I’ve been looking for. With all these new projects I have in mind for our new place, I needed to start with a neutral palette that feels timeless, has some character and allows me to incorporate other elements in a timely manner. But hey! have you recently seen the options of white out there? This is a quick shot I took from Benjamin Moore’s white collection paint chips. Amazing, isn’t it?

I was so excited and obviously took a long time to select the perfect whites for our place - and also some darks because they are so rich and glam… I had to do it! I tried a couple of samples in the new apartment; thought carefully about our pieces of furniture and how they will match the paint; and decided for 3 beautiful tones. I’ve been wanting to have a “white canvas” for a long time and change a bit the grays we currently have - although I can’t promise I won’t incorporate grays again, you know, changes are part of the fun!

Inspiration? TONS! but here are a couple of favorites:

Well, these are baby steps in my own big project but I can say now that the design has officially started! I can’t be happier. Here’s a picture of my final palette. We are painting very soon! Stay tuned for more details on the whole project :)

Thanks again for reading. You guys are the best! xx.

WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

It’s wedding season in the city, and I’m celebrating my wedding anniversary tomorrow. I married the love of my life 3 years ago. It was a small wedding at the DC Courthouse, full of details and surrounded by people we love. It could’t have been more special and intimate. Today, I want to share our happy moments with you.

My mom did my hair, my best friends my make up. All the pictures were taken in our apartment in Adams Morgan, and at the Meridian Hill Park in front of our building. It was such a precious time!

If you are soon to be married here’s my advice: enjoy every minute of it, and do what YOU want to do. I know it’s a stressful time, so try not to lose focus and create happy memories out of it. This is your moment as a couple. Enjoy celebrating it! Also, find a good photographer. Pictures are forever ;)

Happy wedding season! and Happy Anniversary to my love!!

MASCULINE INSPIRATION

Hola!

I’ve been busy these days trying to reinvent my living space. It’s the perfect time to do so and I’m more than excited to give our place new character —Be prepared for some serious series of posts on my home decor! yes! :)

Maybe that sounds a little bit threatening jaja! I think it will be fun to document all the process, or at least my favorite parts. And talking about favorites, these masculine living areas are on top of the list. If you follow me on Instagram (@splendorinspanglish) you might be already aware of this obsession of mine. Don’t judge me, I’ve always thought masculine spaces are extremely gorgeous!

image

There’s something sexy and serious about leather pieces. When combined with some classic whites, like twin arm chairs or that white table with clean lines, they look cozy and modern without losing their personality.

I’m thinking about a leather sofa, rugs, metallics (always!), white walls and accessories. In my mind that all looks fabulous, but finding the right pieces is a big challenge. So, let the huntings begin! :) Any advice? I would love to hear your thoughts. xx.

Cupcake Toppers - DIY

Hi there!

These days have been very very busy, so many things to come that I’m dying to share with you :) In the meantime, and on top of everything else I’m hosting a family potluck for this 4th of July. Pot lucks are awesome! they are intimate and a little bit easier on the hostess. But hey! I still have to add my personal touch to the gathering right?

image

I decided to go for a 1,2,3 do it yourself project and I just love the results! Check these cupcake toppers - or in this case muffin toppers - I made. They are cute and colorful and will immediately beautify your dessert table.

image

image

You need:

  1. Ribbon (red and blue in this case)
  2. Cake toppers (or sandwich skewers depending on what you want to decorate)
  3. Scissors

Cut some ribbon and tie it to the skewer creating little flags. Put as many as you want, I used only two, but it all depends on you :) Get creative!

image

image

How are you celebrating this 4th of July? Are you hosting an event or just getting away? The US is now home for me and I’m so happy to share the joy of its Independence day. So, Happy 4th of July, you all! Hope you have a fantastic time! :)

Thanks so much again for reading. I truly appreciate your support. xo.

Styling Process - Foyer

image

Hi there!

Let’s talk about foyers today. Even if you don’t have a big one there’s always something special about the entrance of your home. I mean, it is what you first see when you enter, and what gives the first impression to a place.

Mine has evolved within time, but since the beginning I knew I wanted it to be functional. So, here are some pictures of its evolution.

image

When I first placed a desk in my foyer, it actually didn’t function as one. It was only a table to place stuff before/after leaving. The thing is, with limited space in the apartment I had to take advantage of every single corner. Oh! and I needed a place to work on. So, I changed it again and yes, it got messy —>

image

It was not until I personalized and organized my desk when it looked pretty. That’s the key to decorate. Make each little space yours, give it some personality, work on it until you love it! At some point, it will be perfect for you :)

For all details on the final transformation of this desk area, check my previous post here

What do you have in your own entrance/foyer? Is it functional or just decorative? Share it with us! and thanks again for passing by.xx.

Splendor Packing List

image

It´s time to move on!

I love organizing, cleaning, emptying spaces, labeling, folding and all those things many people find annoying. Easier said that done. That’s for sure. So, if you are thinking how I manage to enjoy or even survive the process here’s my Ultimate List to Pack Beautifully:

  1. START EARLY - Don’t leave the packing for last minute. Start packing as soon as you are sure you will be moving. Yes, like right now.
  2. START SMALL - Make packing easier taking care of small areas at a time. One closet, one drawer, one little corner each night. You’ll feel accomplished and less tired if you do it this way.
  3. CREATE A CALENDAR - Schedule your packing/cleaning dates starting with the things you don’t use that often. Try to do it for at least one hour per day, and start with the “not-that-necessary-items”. Think: fancy cooking (you can survive one month without using your raclette, or baking cupcakes), last-season or special clothes (coats, sky wears, tuxedos and long dresses, etc.), and seasonal accessories (christmas ornaments, halloween customs, etc.) Then finish with daily things and furniture. You get the idea :)
  4. REUSE BAGS AND BOXES - Remember every set of sheets come in these plastic bags with a zipper? Did you save that shoe box because it was so pretty to toss? Do you have tons of reusable bags because you always forget to take one when you go shopping? It’s time to use them all!  image
  5. CATEGORIZE - Store similar items in bags, containers and boxes so it´s easier to find them when you unpack. Think: cables, remote controls, craft supplies, tablecloths and napkins, flower vases, hair products, etc.
  6. LABEL EVERYTHING. LABEL YOURSELF - I’m serious here. You´ll be surprised by the amount of boxes and packages around when you finish packing. Create a list and number each package so you know what’s inside each of them and keep track when you move. This will ease the process of unpacking too - as you will know what to open first.
  7. DONATE / TOSS / RECYCLE - Keep 3 big bags with you all the time, one for each of these purposes. Get rid of them as soon as they are full. This is a golden rule.
  8. KEEP ESSENTIALS ASIDE - Fill a weekender bag with your essentials to survive for one or two days. You don’t want to be looking for your toothbrush inside 35 boxes. Think: clean sheets and towels, bathroom essentials, easy food, clean clothes and any of your favorite items you can’t live without :)

Ok! Well that’s a lot to do, but I promise it will be so worth it in the end. Don’t forget that wine and friends make everything easier. Manos a la obra!!

Do you have any tips for packing or organizing? What has worked for you in the past? Would love to learn from you!

Happy weekend!! xo.

E-Design - Modern Dining Room

Hi there!

This design addiction of mine has made me push my creativity in so many new ways. I found myself creating work everywhere I go. Work that I enjoy doing and prioritize over many other tasks. I mean, working with colors, textures, furniture and art pieces. What else can I ask for? :)

Recently, I had the opportunity to work on a e-design project. I thought it was going to be harder than it actually was. With all the electronic sources we have now a days, being in touch with the client, getting immediate feedback, and working in a space that you can’t physically visit is actually very doable! Fantastic!

image

This project was made in collaboration with a professional interior designer in Ecuador. The client needed some modern changes in their living room keeping some favorite pieces like the dining room table, and adding some “musts” like the fab white chairs, for example. As an interior designer she proposed structural changes to be made throughout the room: mirror wall + fireplace, ceiling fixtures, built in shelves, etc. And came out with this proposal:

image

She contacted me in order style and accessorize the place! As you can see, it was almost a white and gray canvas. So, I decided to include fun pieces, colors, accessories and textures to give the place more personality.

I prepared an e-design board and did a quick exercise to incorporate the pieces in the floor plan. This was the result:

image

image

I decided to start adding some texture with new upholstered chairs that balanced the other acrylic white ones. Then, I choose to spread some color starting with red, as on the other side of the room (out of the picture) the client had this gorgeous red credenza.

Thinking about connecting both spaces, I used color to create a cool and modern ambiance. Pillows were the way to go! (I love the effect that pillows can have in a room). Finally, I added a rich blue rug and a fantastic piece of art that wraps up the whole color palette. This was so much fun! Styling places is my favorite thing.

So, what do you think of the final result? Would you have chosen any of these pieces yourself? Which one is your favorite?? :)

Thanks for reading and leaving your comments in here! I really appreciate your support. Have a fantastic weekend.xxxxooooo.

Styling Process - Sitting Area

Hola de nuevo! Let’s talk about change today. I just feel that it’s incredible how you get adjusted to different circumstances and scenarios - all the time - all your life. It’s like when I first moved to this apartment. I didn’t know what to do with such a “big” space. We didn’t have much furniture at the time, and I had no idea on how to make stylish. That’s why when I have people telling me they like my place I feel so flattered. Seriously.

I definitely learned a lot about design through personal experience. Moving furniture around. Obsessing over shows, magazines and e-sources. And taking some key courses that oh-so opened my eyes to endless decoration ideas.

Para muestra un botón. I recently found all these pictures of my place, taken since the first days showing all the changes I made in this small sitting area:

image

So, instead of showing a before and after here it is: A PROCESS. We get the best light through those windows on the right, and I just knew since the beginning that I wanted to be able to sit around there, enjoy the sunlight and relax. My first attempt was to put two (obviously white) IKEA chairs against that wall. It was kind of the right idea but the space just felt so empty.

Then, I tried to fill up the wall behind the chairs. Still shy at that time, I couldn’t put together anything else than 3 medium size picture frames in a horizontal line. mmm. I knew I wanted that area to be something special but couldn’t figure out how. That’s why I added some other pieces of furniture: a lamp and a shelving unit. I liked both pieces separately but not there. Oh my!

image

By that time our dining room was occupying that place too (It’s the best place for sunday brunch) Finally, I decided to work on a collage of black and white pictures to create a focal point and background for my chairs. The chairs? Well, I just felt in love with these two guys and got rid of the IKEA ones. I call it evolution :) They were white and comfy and stylish. Same concept, different pieces.

Now I guess you would see these pictures and think: Oh! that’s easy! Well let me tell you that a design process can take a long time, specially when your creativity is low. The good news are, I would always have fun trying to improve my spaces and making them mine. I’m the type of person who finds decor projects everywhere I go! And I’m just happy to share all my projects with you.

So, let me know your story! Do you have any particular place at home that you are not completely happy about? Share your ideas in here. I’d love to hear from you.

Enjoy creating! Embrace change! xo,

m.

Thankful

So, this is a very personal post. Let’s make that clear.

When I started this blog I conceived it as a way to share my projects, a personal place where I could discover more and play with decor, styling, design, DIYs, beautiful images, ideas. All that good stuff. I was literally naive as to how much it would mean to me and how important it was going to be in my life. Man! I didn’t know what I was getting into!

It’s been only a few months since I launched this project of mine, and I can’t even express the amount of happiness that has brought into my life. Seriously. I never felt this creative and inspired and strong and hopeful and energized. Also, besides like planning my wedding, I don’t recall the last time I spent ALL THIS ENERGY thinking about a project, working on it full time and dreaming about it getting big(ger). The ones who know me well know I become an awful person when I’m sleepy - or hungry jaja - but with this project I’m permissive, and patient, and I don’t care if I have to stay late at night to photoshop some pics, or stop buying pretty things because I want to invest the money on my projects, or getting up early in the morning to work on MY thing before going to work. Something keeps me going. Passion keeps me motivated.

And I decided that I’m going to be true to myself - and true to you guys as well -. You know I’m a doer, I like to make, create, design, and try it again. I put LOVE on everything I do for this blog, on every post - including this one. So, I wanted to share my thoughts with you today because I’m THANKFUL. Thankful to all the comments and the followers and the likes. I really appreciate all your support and would love to hear more about what you expect from this space. I want to give you guys the best I can create! So, don’t stop sharing with me. Better say, take this as our personal place to imagine and to explore! Let me hear your thoughts on style, your needs on decor,  the projects you would like to see here, the problems that need to be solved, and also the things that you are not that interested in that much. I promise I would do my best to make them a part of Splendor, and to make YOU a part of Splendor.

THAT SAID, I will now go back to my currently-getting-longer TO DO list, and I’ll be back soon :) Promise.

Cheer more, do what you love, find your passion and never let go! Thanks, thanks, THANKS SO MUCH for reading.xo.

More Bar Obsession + Inspiration

Summer is around the corner, people! And nothing is more summery and happy than a refreshing cocktail with one of those little umbrellas and a piece of pineapple in it - at least that’s what pops in my head when I think of it :)

For so many reasons, I’ve been obsessed with bars lately, maybe because of the bar cart fever around - I’ve seen many oh-my-god-so-pretty ideas! - but mostly because I recently inherited a very special set of vintage hand-painted cocktail glasses and garafe from my grandma (insert a thousand hearts in here). Isn’t it beautiful? (see picture below!) I brought it home super carefully and placed it on my bar, but haven’t decided quite yet on where/how to display it. Might need to rearrange EVERYTHING to find the perfect place for it - the story of my life!

image

I adore bar carts, but don’t own one (yet). Instead, I have a classic foldable wooden bar. It doubles as a credenza or tall table when we are not having a party. And I’ve been trying to give it a new look for a while. Maybe some modern wallpaper in the interior? Maybe a coat of paint? So many options!

image

Source: www.homedit.com

While looking for inspiration pictures I found all these gorgeous alternatives for a bar at home. I have to admit, I might turn mine into the official bar only for special events and place a small bar somewhere else in the house. I mean, you need cocktails in every single room, right?

image

Source: www.ELLEdecor.com

Taking a look again at all these pictures I certified once more how much I love grays and neutrals. Look at this elegant black wall and the fantastic contrast it makes with that golden tray. Classic! Btw, that’s Badgley Mischka’s home. Oh yes. BEAUTIFUL!

image

Neutrals again! and a set of great club leather chairs that invite for some cognac and a long chat. I love the rustic bar behind and the light fixture.

Surprised that I liked this shiny mirrored tray WITH a mirror above? Plus, the golden lamp, all those metallic accents and clean lines on the white chairs. So perfect!

When I saw this bar I thought it was so clever and pretty - I secretly adore all french cottage type of furniture and decor, but never dared to include it in my place -. Whenever I see different styles mixed I instantly get stuck. I totally admire eclectic spaces, but haven’t found the best way to do it at home.

And bar carts! Obviously. These are not my favorite options ever, but I love them because the use of space is great and they both have different personalities. Love the first one because of its elegance. To me it says sassy! The second one is more colorful and simple, like for daily use WITH  a tray you can put anywhere when you need it. Love it too!

image

And finally! black and white gorgeous simplicity. You can click on this picture and find a bunch of more options for your own inspiration! ;)

So many amazing options and I continue thinking what to do with my bar at home (sigh!) I guess I have some time to figure that out, try to arrange it, look for accessories (!) and put extra character on it. In the end, it’s all about having fun with the whole process. Will definitely keep you posted on any progress I make :)

Enjoy the long weekend and start cheering right now! It’s almost 5pm (somewhere). Thanks again for reading! xx.

BAR STYLING for a Party!

image

After a month of travels, I’m finally back home! Nothing like flowers around, music and my slippers, a latte and the sunlight in my living room. Couldn’t be happier!

Being away for a while was energizing and inspiring at the same time. I came back with so many (crazy?) ideas for new projects that I’m planning to get done during the upcoming months. BUT! in the meanwhile, I want to party! jaja I DO! I’ve been saying that for a while. I want to organize a couple of cocktail parties, mingle with friends, catch up, and share the love. (you know playing hostess is one of my favorite things)

image

I saved these pictures from my last post on mother’s day brunch, because I wanted to share them separately. Happens that you can’t organize a get together without thinking about THE BAR. Some people have serious bar set ups, others use a cute bar cart; some people hide their liquor in some sort of cabinet or try to display it mixed with glasses or similar. In any case, you can always do some special bar styling depending on the type of event you are hosting (for fun!). In this opportunity, I had a big space to work with and do some pretty bar styling for an intimate brunch at home.

image

Here are some basic steps to style your bar space for your next party:

1. First, remove everything from the shelves to properly see the space and its potential. 2. Choose the glasses you would use during the event and display them all around. When doing this, make sure you have enough glasses for cocktails, water and drinks. Your guests should have easy access to your signature cocktail and other non-alcoholic options.

image

image

3. Pair cocktails and dessert! I love displaying them together. There’s no better way to enjoy sweets than with a glass of bubbly. Look at these beautiful mini cheese cakes. 4. Use a tiered tower to display them and add fruit for more color. 5. Use food name tags to mark your mixers and desserts. Yum!

image

6. Finally, add flowers or decorative pieces you are already using on your table set up. The idea is to make every space in your house feel like part of the party; welcome guests to approach them, and match them with the decor. Personally, I love adding lights everywhere! Small christmas lights are useful all year long if used properly, but you can use any piece you find to be pretty. Try it!

Alright! now back to my calendar and party planning. I’ll be sharing some more tips, ideas and pretty pics with you soon. As always, thanks so much for passing by and sending your comments. I truly appreciate it. Happy Weekend!! xo.
